Ultrarunner Jason Romero knows a little about beating the odds in sport. Forty-six year old Romero is legally blind, but he hasn’t let that stop him from competing in the top ultra-long distance races in the country. These days, he has a new running partner — his fifteen-year old son, Sage. Sage is autistic, but that doesn’t stop him from being his dad’s eyes — and encourager — as they train and race together.
Key Takeaways:
- Jason Romero is an ultrarunner and also legally blind as a result of a degenerative disease.
- Recently his 15-year old autistic son has become his running guide to help him when running at night or in unfamiliar terrain.
- Jason is proud of his son and they are both improving their skills and succeeding as a running duo.
“For me just as a person, it is so inspiring to see what Sage is doing,” Romero said. “But as his father, I am so proud I am practically bouncing out of my skin.”
