The sudden death of a 47-year old Australian Ironman has raised the question of how a seemingly fit person–even an athlete–can suffer sudden cardiac arrest and death. Dr Ross Walker explains that although exercise is generally beneficial for anyone, patients over age 40 should be especially careful about not overworking the heart. As a cardiologist in Sydney, he recommends regular heart checks past age 35, particularly for those involved in competition sports.
