The Surprising Reason You Need to Take a Rest Day

Many men think that every workout day needs to be hard. Not so, according to new research at the American Physiological Society. They’ve found that taking a rest day not only benefits muscles, but bones, as well. This is due to increased levels inflammation, which may lead to an increase of SOST (Sclerostin, a protein which hinders new bone formation) with intensive training sessions. After performing a study with female rowers, they also found that prolonged, high-intensity training can cause damage to your bones over time. We must also remember to take a rest day, because when we work out hard, our muscles suffer micro-tears, and the body needs time to rest and repair itself. As well, we should also schedule a ‘deloading’ week every 4-8 weeks, where we stay away from the most taxing exercises, such as deadlifts and squats.
