The Relationship Between Age and Calf Injuries in Runners

The Relationship Between Age and Calf Injuries in Runners

A recent study examined the correlation between calf injuries and age, specifically in men. The study found that as male runners get older they have a breakdown in specific muscle fibers known as the “fast twitch” muscle. This breakdown leads to calf injuries that include both strains and tears. While the majority of other common leg injuries and frequency of injuries remained constant throughout the aging process, calf injuries seems to have been one of the only injury types to increase with age.

Key Takeaways:

  • There has been researches done on common injuries from runners and it’s most common for them to have knee and calf problems.
  • With age, individuals are more prone to calf injuries compared to any other muscle in the leg.
  • Older runner needs to take better care of their knees and calves as they are more prone to injuries.

“Calf injuries appear to be unique among muscular sports injuries in that they appear more frequently as you get older.”
