When most people think of middle age, they think of the classic midlife crisis. However, recent research has shown that approaching middle age is instead “exhilarating, not terrifying”, as many people make it out to be. Some people now turn midlife into a rebirth, turning off “autopilot” mode and break routines, choosing purpose over happiness. Now, at midlife, their identity has been formed, and now their foundation has been set, so they can afford to take bigger risks. This is especially true with longer and longer lifespans. With maturity, people are less likely to be driven by ego, more likely to know what they truly desire, and a little less likely to care about what others think. We should look forward to middle age instead of dreading it, because now even though many possibilities are now closed, the remaining ones can be more fully lived.
