A study conducted by researchers in the UK found that certain types of sports played over time can significantly reduce the risk of death. Dr. Pekka Oja of the UKK Institute for Health Promotion Research studied over 80,000 participants from Scotland and England over a 9 year period. They surveyed the group at the beginning of the study to rate activity levels, and to see what sports and types of physical activity they participated in. After nine years, there were 8790 deaths among the participants with the group participating in sports having a reduced rate of death at about 28%. Sports that reduced death risks even more were racket sports, swimming, and aerobics.
Key Takeaways:
- Swimming, aerobics and racket sports had strongest decrease in risk of death.
- Swimming reduced heart disease risk by 41% and death by 28%.
- exercise is good no matter what you do and which way you look at it
