We’ve all heard people complain that “my back just goes!” when picking up children, unloading the dishwasher, or in more severe cases, even bending down to tie their shoes. To understand why this happens, we need to understand the anatomy of our back. We have three layers of muscles, the deep (for stability), intermediate, and superficial (both for movement). Back weakness is caused by changes in the deep muscles of our spine, resulting in compensation by other muscles. When we ask too much of these compensatory muscles, because they’re doing a job they’re not made for, they tend to become inflamed and sore, resulting in weakness. To address this, we can perform exercises targeted at strengthening the back, which may reverse, decrease, or even eliminate back pain.
