Keeping active as we age can keep us living independently as we age. Older people can have a fitness level of someone 10 years younger by exercising. Exercise can also lower the risk of dementia and improve mental function. A fourth of all senior women and 20% of senior men admit to doing no physical activity at all in a week. Physical activity and exercise improve muscle strength and lower the incidence of falls. Loss of muscle mass and balance are the most preventable of risk factors. Older people can do yoga, dancing, gardening and other household tasks for activity.
