An occasional “senior moment” such as forgetting your keys does not mean that you are sliding into early Alzheimer’s or dementia. In fact, the majority of people who make it to old age do not develop Alzheimer’s disease. However, according to experts, there are ways to protect your cognitive functioning and decrease your risk of dementia. Most importantly, remain active. Research shows that those who are physically active have a lower risk of cognitive decline than those who are sedentary. Practice healthy habits such as not smoking and consuming alcohol only in moderation. Maintain a healthy weight and keep your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar levels in check. Eat a healthy whole foods diet and keep red meat to a minimum. Be sure to get a good night’s sleep and have fun with friends and family regularly.
