Some people look forward to large snowfalls in hopes of a snow day, snowmobiling, or skiing. However, studies show that there is a 23% increase in hospital visits in the two days after a large snowfall. The main theory behind the spike in hospital visits is the need to shovel snow. “Snow-shoveler’s infarction” taxes the cardiovascular system, putting people at risk of a heart attack. This can be prevented by getting more regular exercise, so our bodies are more prepared for the hard work of shoveling snow.
