Sugary drinks are extremely common– it’s likely more than 50% of Americans drink them on a daily basis. However, they have been shown to have negative impacts on brain health later in life, leading to problems including dementia. Even sugars substituted with artificial sugars– like in diet soda– have similar impacts. Although some studies have indicated that sugar is toxic to the brain, researchers warn that correlation does not equal causation. It’s possible that sugary drink intake correlates to an unhealthy lifestyle that, in summation, has negative cognitive impacts.
