Typically, it has been widely accepted that as we age we lose a significant amount of memory. However, in recent studies some researches found that there are some people who have a significantly lower amount of memory loss and they are calling them “super-agers”. They possess physical traits in their brain that prevent the extent of memory loss those without those traits have. For example, those that have a thicker cortex or more nerve connections than average.
Key Takeaways:
- A “Super-Ager” is a senior citizen, age 80 and over, who has a brain with a thicker cortex than those that age normally.
- A study showed that the “Super-Agers” loss less than 1/2 of their brain mass as average people over the age of 80.
- Previous research shows that exercise and a good diet do contribute to the rebuilding of brain connectors.
“The most important aspect is to determine the possible genetic, social, and environmental factors that contribute to the super-agers’ thicker cortices”
