If you ever think that getting old means you become less mobile, you may be wrong. Doyle Carpenter, who is 77 years old, just won an ultramarathon. Overall, he has competed in 130 of them, each being well over 100 miles. These races are run in 48 hours outdoors, so there can also be bad weather involved. He has been running since he was 12, and he doesn’t plan to stop anytime soon. His daily routine involves running 11 miles on his farm in Tennessee. Carpenter says that he must have just been “born lined up right.”
Key Takeaways:
- Carpenter has been running long distances since the age of 12
- At 77, he has been fortunate to have no joint injuries for his entire life
- His jobs of bricklaying and raising cattle have kept him fit his entire life
In October, Carpenter won the Endless Mile in Alabaster, Alabama, completing 149 miles within the 48-hour time limit—in spite of cold overnight temperatures that had the race director clocking laps from inside a sleeping bag.
