6 Reasons Your Doctor Needs to Know You’re a Runner

To keep your body healthy and your performance optimal, it’s important to tell your doctor that you run. As a runner, your heart performs a little differently. Your doctor needs to look for athletic heart syndrome, cardiomyopathy, chest pains, and breathing difficulties, and treat accordingly. Also, a runner with hypertension may react poorly to certain beta blockers and diuretics, which are two treatments for the disease. He or she may also have recommendations for skin cancer prevention. If you are reluctant to speak to your physician about your running as it relates to your health, consult a sports medicine specialist.
